西暦645年、唐の皇帝・太宗（パク・ソンウン）は朝鮮半島をも支配下に置くべく、自ら20万人を超える大軍を率い高句麗の都・平壌へと進撃を続けた。高句麗諸城の城主が次々と降伏・敗走する中、安市城の城主ヤン・マンチュン（チョ・インソン）は、国を守るため、高句麗の民を守るためたった5,000人の兵を率い、無謀とも言える孤立無援の戦いを挑むことを決意する。
